Hephaestus was born to Hera, in some versions conceived without a father as her response to Zeus's birthing of Athena
alone. Born lame or later thrown from Olympus by an ashamed Hera, he fell to earth and was raised by sea nymphs, learning
the craft of the forge in secret before ever returning to Olympus.
Hephaestus's first great triumph was one of cunning rather than combat. He built Hera a magnificent golden throne as
a gift, but one rigged with invisible bonds that trapped her the moment she sat down, forcing the Olympians to finally invite
him back to secure his mother's release, on his own terms.
As the master smith of Olympus, Hephaestus forged the weapons and armor of the gods and greatest heroes, including
Zeus's thunderbolts, Achilles's legendary shield, and Hermes's winged sandals. His forge beneath the volcano became the
source of nearly every legendary artifact in Greek myth.
