Dionysus was born to Zeus and the mortal princess Semele, whose life ended when she glimpsed Zeus in his full divine
form. Zeus rescued the unborn Dionysus and sewed him into his own thigh until he was ready to be born, making Dionysus
twice-born and the only Olympian with a mortal parent.
Raised in secret and hidden from Hera's jealous wrath, Dionysus traveled the known world teaching humanity the art of
winemaking. When pirates once kidnapped him at sea, he transformed their ship into a writhing garden of vines and turned
his captors into dolphins, proving his divine power could not be caged.
Dionysus's greatest triumph was his ascension to Olympus itself, taking the seat once held by Hestia, who stepped aside
to preserve peace among the gods. As god of wine and ecstatic ritual, his worship spread wildly across Greece, and he
eventually descended to the underworld to bring his mortal mother Semele back as a goddess.
